N95, FFP2, and FFP3 Masks: Understanding Respiratory Protection Levels

Respiratory protection is essential in workplaces where airborne hazards such as dust, fumes, vapours, and biological agents are present. Understanding the differences between N95, FFP2, and FFP3 masks helps you select the appropriate level of protection for each task and environment.

N95 Masks (NIOSH Standard)

N95 masks are certified under the US NIOSH standard and filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. They are widely used in healthcare and light industrial applications. The “N” designation means they are not oil-resistant, so they should not be used in environments with oil-based aerosols.

FFP2 Masks (EN 149 Standard)

FFP2 masks are certified under the European EN 149 standard and filter at least 94 percent of airborne particles. They are functionally equivalent to N95 masks and are the most commonly used disposable respirators on UAE construction and industrial sites. They provide adequate protection against construction dust, cement particles, and most non-toxic industrial dusts.

FFP3 Masks (EN 149 Standard)

FFP3 masks offer the highest level of disposable respirator protection, filtering at least 99 percent of airborne particles. They are required for work involving asbestos, silica dust, hardwood dust, and biological agents. FFP3 masks with exhalation valves reduce breathing resistance and heat build-up, which is particularly important for outdoor workers in UAE summer conditions.

Fit Testing

No mask provides its rated protection unless it fits properly. Quantitative and qualitative fit tests should be conducted for each worker to ensure an adequate seal. Facial hair, incorrect sizing, and improper donning are the most common causes of mask failure. UAE employers should incorporate fit testing into their respiratory protection programmes.
