Ear Plugs
Ear plugs are inserted into the ear canal and come in disposable foam, reusable silicone, and custom-moulded varieties. They are lightweight, disposable, and comfortable for extended wear. However, they must be properly rolled and inserted to achieve their rated protection.
Ear Muffs
Ear muffs cover the entire outer ear with cushioned cups and provide consistent protection regardless of ear canal size. They are easier to fit correctly than ear plugs, can be worn over hard hats using clip-on brackets, and are more hygienic in shared-use environments. NRR ratings for ear muffs range from 20-31 dB. Some models include electronic noise-cancellation that allows communication while blocking harmful noise levels.
When to Combine Both
In environments where noise levels exceed 105 dB — such as pile driving, pneumatic hammer operations, or jet engine maintenance — dual protection using both ear plugs and ear muffs together is recommended. This combination can increase effective noise reduction by 5-10 dB beyond either device alone.
